Carnival Cruise Line - Carnival Dream – FunHub

While many cruise lines have prided themselves on recently adding internet access to their ships, Carnival Cruise Line has decided to take on the internets latest phenomena; Social Networking.

On September 21st, the Carnival Dream, the lines newest ship, which weighs in at 130,000-tons, will set sail on its maiden voyage. Passengers onboard will get to experience the lines most recent technological upgrade, the FunHub, the very first onboard intranet for passengers. The FunHub will give information on the different services, facilities and activities onboard the Dream, which will be accessible via 36 stations throughout the ship, 10-inch netbooks, which passengers can rent, or their own personal computer. However, the biggest feature about Carnival Dream’s FunHub will be their exclusive shipboard social network. Via the social network passengers are able to create a profile, send messages, create groups, and even invite other passengers to different events scheduled onboard the ship.

The onboard social network gives Carnival an interesting opportunity to involve its passengers like never before. The social network will give the ship the ability to make announcements, take polls, and deliver information about weather and the upcoming ports of call. Though the network is opened to all guests onboard, I can definitely seeing the social networking aspects being incredibly popular amongst the ships younger guests, especially the 15-17 year old set, who are able to hang out in Club O2 onboard Carnival’s ships.

As of now, FunHub will be an exclusive to the Carnival Dream. It will be interesting to see how quickly this new service will be incorporated onto the other ships.
